Blog #5 Dilli Haat

Being born and brought up in Delhi, I have been going to this permanent market, popularly known as Dilli Haat or Delhi Haat (open-air market) run by Delhi tourism, so very often! Dilli Haat is a unique bazaar in the heart of the city that displays different aspects of Indian culture and tradition. It has small shops and food stalls from all the states of India at this one particular market which means you can literally explore every bit of India at this one market of Delhi.

So, I thought why not search on youtube a video on a traveler's experience in order to showcase you what all Delhi Haat has to offer so that next time when you all, my international friends visit Delhi, you surely make a trip to this forever-happening bazaar.

The youtube blogger begins by talking a little about the history of the market. She finds it funny yet absurd that this market, in INA was opened in the year 1994 and was made wheelchair accessible in 2003. She explains that since India is such a diverse country it is not really possible for everyone to experience every states' culture, Delhi Haat is the best option for travelers to get a glimpse of every state of India.

In the next scene, an old shopkeeper is playing a popular Bollywood song's tune on an Indian classical instrument. Later, the blogger wanders around and find all sorts of beautiful Indian silver pieces of jewelry. I must say I love shopping Indian jewelry junk at Delhi Haat, they are really so pretty and they complete your ethnic look!

Next, she comes across beautiful handicrafts, trays, leather goods, paintings, frames, shawls, scarves, silk, cotton sarees and a lot more. She mentions that in Delhi Haat, one can get all kinds of silk- from Raw Silk to Banarsi Silk to Bhagalpuri Silk. The silk dupattas (long scarf- somewhat like a shawl that is essential in Indian traditional clothing) were really gorgeous. She also tries on some juttis which is a type of footwear common in North India. She gets her youtube profile name, DesiGirl Traveller written on a rice grain as a souvenir!

Towards the end of the video by trying food from one of the states in India; Momos from the Sikkim stall and she loves it! One can also get Mehendi or Henna put on their hands or get their hair thread weaving in Delhi Haat. The blogger gets her hair braided in shades of blue!

From my personal experience, Delhi Haat is my all time favorite place to go be it for food, shopping or just hanging out. I absolutely love it! Well, after watching the video, now I can't wait to get back to India to make my invigorating trip to Delhi Haat!

Blog #6 Aisha Movie Review

One of my all-time favorite movies is ‘ Aisha .’ I decided to find reviews of that movie and see how others perceived it as.   Mayank Shekhar, an Indian film critic gave the movie a 1/2 star out of 5. Let's find out why. The critique explains th at the movie begins with a wedding of a middle-aged pair with couples sipping on champagne, tinkling & toasting to good health and white sparkling white clothes. He made sure to point out that white is considered an inauspicious color by Hindus. In this movie, Sundays afternoons were reserved for fancy hats at the races. He claims to have never gone for such imagined circles and found them hyped. According to him, these details were necessary.   He then described how he found the New York-based Mira Nair seem to know more about New Delhi’s upper-class and Punjabis as in the movie Monsoon Wedding, than this director. The film borrows from Jane Austen’s novel Emma. Sonam Kapoor plays the lead role and she’s Aisha ....
