Blog #2 Haldi

No Indian dish is really complete without all its wonderful spices! one such spice that not only brings flavor and color to the dish but also has numerous benefits is Turmeric. Known as Haldi in Hindi, Turmeric is rich in antioxidants and may be helpful to those with digestive problems.

Always encouraged by elders to add Haldi to every dish and even have it with milk or water in the morning made me very curious to find out more about its benefits. And thus, I ended up finding an article on the same on Google. The article by LiveStrong is talking about both Turmeric and Gram flour in the same space, but I will be discussing Turmeric first and then concentrating on Gram flour separately afterward.

The Article starts by explaining how important Turmeric is in Indian cuisine and how it makes Indian cuisine of the healthier cuisines to eat. Then it moves on to its benefits which include that Turmeric is rich in antioxidants and how Turmeric is for our stomach.

According to this article, one of the active substances in turmeric is curcumin which contains high levels of antioxidants. Turmeric is also used as a herbal medicine since it used to treat a number of digestive problems including gas, abdominal pain, and distention. It is also said by the authors of Herbal Medicine that turmeric may also help in aiding indigestion but may not work as well as over-the-counter antacids.

Coming to one of the next popular flour in Indian cuisines is Gram flour, commonly known as Besan in Hindi. The article conveys that Gram flour, which is made from chickpeas, is used to make Indian flatbread (Cheela or Pudha) and vegetable pakora- a type of tempura and is high in fiber, iron, zinc, and folate.

Reading the article by LiveStrong.com made me understand the benefits of this flour even more. The explained that gram flour is a good source of fiber. A half-cup serving contains 5 grams of fiber. Furthermore, getting increased fiber in your diet may reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes, as noted in the article. Fiber is also very satiating which helps you eat less and stay full for a long time making it easier for you to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Then there were given few ways to include gram flour in your diet, in one sentence.

Elaborated next was how gram flour is rich in Iron, Zinc, and Folate. As a ground chickpea, gram flour is rich in nutrients found in both vegetables and protein Iron is important for the production of red blood cells. Zinc keeps your immune system strong and helps you fight off infections. It is also important for repairing wounds.  such poultry. A half-cup serving of this flour meets 12 percent of the daily value for iron, 9 percent of the daily value for zinc and 50 percent of the daily value for folate as stated in the article. Iron is important for the production of red blood cells. Zinc keeps your immune system strong and helps you fight off infections. It is also important for repairing wounds. Lastly, women need adequate intakes of folate to prevent neural tube defects in their children, as mentioned in the article.

The article was a great read for me. Growing up, I have always been consuming both turmeric and gram flour in my diet but now I finally understand why they have always been given so much importance. Frankly, I loved using haldi in my Indian dishes just for the vibrant color it adds but now I'll consume it more often with my milk too. My grandmom will surely be happy to see this change. One of my favorite ways to eat chick-pea is in the form of Chane or Chole, but when it comes to chick-pea flour I love making Pudha or Cheela from it! Its a must try for all the vegetarians out there!

Blog #6 Aisha Movie Review

One of my all-time favorite movies is ‘ Aisha .’ I decided to find reviews of that movie and see how others perceived it as.   Mayank Shekhar, an Indian film critic gave the movie a 1/2 star out of 5. Let's find out why. The critique explains th at the movie begins with a wedding of a middle-aged pair with couples sipping on champagne, tinkling & toasting to good health and white sparkling white clothes. He made sure to point out that white is considered an inauspicious color by Hindus. In this movie, Sundays afternoons were reserved for fancy hats at the races. He claims to have never gone for such imagined circles and found them hyped. According to him, these details were necessary.   He then described how he found the New York-based Mira Nair seem to know more about New Delhi’s upper-class and Punjabis as in the movie Monsoon Wedding, than this director. The film borrows from Jane Austen’s novel Emma. Sonam Kapoor plays the lead role and she’s Aisha ....
